The DiskDrive thruster series with built-in controller can be controlled through a CAN interface. This allows for effective cabling as several thrusters can be controlled through the same power/data bus.
For applications where the host which is controlling the motors does not have a CAN interface, Hydromea developed the thruster bus converter. Depending on its configuration it can process various control inputs such as an analog voltage, a pulse-width-modulated (PWM) signal or serial commands and then generate the proper motor commands and send them over the CAN bus.
When several DiskDrives are connected to the same bus, a single thruster bus converter can control up to 4 DiskDrives using analog control inputs or 3 using PWM control inputs. The number of DiskDrives controlled through serial commands (via RS232/485/TTL) depends on the protocol implemented.
